How To Tighten A Wig

How To Tighten A Wig

Yay, it's great to know that wigs elevate our look. However, it’s so disappointing to discover they don't fit and are loose when you wear them. That disheartening feeling is the worst.

If you've been there, we want to change that and if you haven't, it's okay to have a few tricks up your sleeve. So, check out the ways you can tighten a wig and make it snug and fit in this post.

Are you ready to DIY? The steps will be easy to follow and practice.

What You Must Do Before You Tighten a Wig

It's important to measure your head before you begin adjusting your wig. Remember that the main reason you're doing this is to have a wig that fits, which means you don't want to reduce it too much or too little. So, pick up a measuring tape, and let's get the measurement of your head right.

  • First, make sure your hair is braided down for a flat base. Do not measure if your hair is in a ponytail, bun, or in any style that protrudes. It will alter your measurement and make your wig unfitting.
  • Once you have a flat hairstyle, wear your wig cap but let it stay behind your hairline. You want to make sure it doesn't show after you wear your wig.
  • Let's measure: start with your circumference, wrapping the tape from your hairline to the back and around. Do not place the tape over your ears to get an accurate result.
  • Jot that down and move to measuring from ear to ear and one side of your nape to the other side of your nape.

After you have all your measurements, move to tightening your wig.

Six Ways to Tighten a Wig

There are various ways you can tighten a wig, but we've listed six here.

Let's take you through each and see how we can adjust the size of your wig real quick.

Method 1: Attach An Elastic Band

This method is the first on our list because it does the job properly. You should be rest assured that the elastic will tighten the wig and make it stay put on your head. It's even a good choice for all your wigs with laces.

So, how do you tighten a wig with an elastic band? Here's how;

Step 1:

Take a long elastic band, then place one side behind your ears and pull until it reaches the other side. Now, remember we measured from one side of your nape to another, this is similar.

Cut the elastic afterward, following the length you got.

Step 2:

Place the elastic band inside the loose wig and set them strategically, just like you measured earlier from one side to the other.

Step 3:

Pin both sides with bobby pins, then sew. You can use your needle and thread or sewing machine to sew the elastic on each side. But make it tight so it doesn't lose once you start wearing the wig.

For those whose wigs come with a loose elastic, get your measurements, then reduce it at the center. You can do this with your needle and thread.

Method 2: Wig Grip

Wig grip is a silicone/velvet headband that’s made to grip your wig and hold it in place. This band protects your wig from falling off and gives you the security you need. However, you can only wear it with glueless wigs since they go around your head.

The wig grip is a comfortable band you can wear. So, you shouldn't feel pain or discomfort while putting it on.

  • If you want to use it, wear your wig cap properly, then apply the wig grip on top of the wig cap.
  • The headband should sit just right behind the cap–not too far and not before the cap. This is because you don't want it showing beneath after wearing your wig.
  • Lastly, put on your wig and adjust appropriately. Beautiful! Your wig should be snug and tightly fitted.

Note: If the wig is too big or loose, the wig grip might not work.

Method 3: Adjustable Bands

Adjustable Bands

Sorry to say, but most sensible companies use a mechanism that makes adjustments easy, in this case, adjustable straps. Check Cynosure Hair huamna hair wigs with adjustable band. Mainly because they ensure wearing wigs regardless of the head size, is convenient. However, if yours doesn't come with these bands, you can attach them.

Follow the steps below:

Step 1:

Use your measurements to figure out where you want to place the bands. This should go from behind one ear to the other ear.

Step 2:

Get your bands and wig, then attach each behind the ears. All you have to do is sew them tightly to make sure they don't lose soon. You can test it out to see if it works.

Adjustable straps may feature hooks, velcro, or elastic. If it's elastic attach one side and then the other after making sure it's your size. Velcro should be done the same way, sewing one side and then the other to the areas behind the ears of the wig. For hooks, detach them in the middle before sewing them separately. You should wear the wig to see if it's tight enough once you’ve attached the bands. This is creative!

Method 4: Sew The Cap

This is an easy way to tighten your wig. It's different from the methods mentioned above, as it doesn't require adding anything to your wig. Instead, you'll only use two tools—your needle and thread.

The sewing method may not work in some cases, especially if your wig doesn't come with a strap. However, this is still useful in tightening your wig.

Step 1:

We always mention that you should measure the areas behind your ears on the wig. Well, that's what you'll do here. But this time, you'll work with the cap attached to the wig.

Turn it inside out and place it on a mannequin head. Next, fold behind your ears (either the left or right side). This will keep the cap tight on your head.

Step 2:

Use your needle and thread to sew from one side till you reach the other side. Make sure it's tight and avoid pulling your wig strands. If you want, sew it again to keep it tight, then tie and cut off the excess thread.

Method 5: Wig Clips

Wig Clips

Using wig clips doesn't look like it works, does it? But they do. They can help give extra security whenever you wear your wig.

The clips come in different sizes and work for different wig types, including full lace and 360 lace frontal wigs.

See how you can use wig clips to tighten your wig below;

  • First, fold the wig inside out as that's the area you'll be working with.
  • Next, attach the clips to different parts of the wig. Start with the parts you think you need more security. You can put one, two, or three, whichever way you think it'll work best. Do this by sewing with your needle and thread. But let the color of the thread match with the clips and your wig cap.
  • Once it's nice and snug, cut off the thread. That way, it won't unravel.

Note: Sew to the cap underneath the hair.

Method 6: Wig Tape

Wig Tape

The last method you can use to tighten your wig on our list is with wig tapes. Wig tapes work whether you have hair or not and they can hold for a long time.

So, if you'll be using them, follow the easy steps here;

Step 1

Clean the areas you want to put the wig tape on with alcohol and cotton balls. You're doing this to remove any dirt that won't allow it to stick.

Step 2

Now, cut your tapes if they aren't in small sections already.

Step 3

Wear your wig cap to protect the rest of your hair while you get set to apply the tapes to your hairline or the area you want.

Step 4

Place the tapes along your hairline and the necessary sides you think you need to be more secure. If you'll be wearing a lace front wig, make sure the tapes don't show in the middle. So, put them in a manner that won't make them visible.

Step 5

Remove the other side of the tape and pull your wig forward gently.

Don't allow any strand to touch it. So, be very careful.

Step 6

Now, press until you feel the lace is glued to the tapes. You can't adjust after pressing and that'll be a disaster if your wig is not placed correctly.

Conclusion

This article has given you six different ways to tighten your wig. While some are a more permanent solution, like the sewing and straps, others are temporary solutions (wig tapes, wig fix). But every method tightens a loose wig and that's all that matters.

If you're a beginner at adjusting a wig, we'll advise you to go with the easiest until you know you can fix it right using a more complicated method.
