Braid Pattern for Wigs

Braid Pattern for Wigs

Are you curious about the best braid pattern you should install for your wig? For a flat and natural appearance under the wig.

There are different braid patterns. Your choice of braid pattern for your wigs depends on factors like:

a. The style of the wig

b. The volume of your hair

c. How versatile and natural do you want the wig to appear

Although specific braid patterns work for particular wig hairstyles, the goal is for the wig to lie flat on your scalp.

The secret to achieving a perfect lying wig (regardless of the style) is the size of your braids. The smaller the braid size, the flatter the wig appears (especially at the front).

Also, with smaller braids, you can rock your natural hair when you don’t feel like wearing wigs. Braid patterns for wigs are quite different from the ones for sew-ins.

Sew-in braid patterns are more precise to achieve the desired style.

Let’s look at the most common braid pattern for wigs.

6 Most Common Braid Patterns for Wigs

There are different braid patterns for wigs, but we will only stick to the common ones you will need for different wig hairstyles. Alright, let’s get started.

1. Small-Medium Size All Back Cornrows

This simple braid pattern is one of the most common for wigs. It is easy to achieve, and you can install it in minutes.

Small-Medium Size All Back Cornrows

The great thing about this hairstyle is that it is beginner-friendly. You can make it yourself without being a professional hairstylist. This braid hairstyle involves plaiting your cornrows in straight rows. You can make this braid yourself following these simple steps.

  • Divide your hair into two parts.
  • Divide the first half into rows.
  • Pick a row at a time and braid backward.
  • Once you've braided the first section, braid the other half. You can tie your hair with a hair band before tucking it in or sew with thread upwards (this helps to prevent lumps at the back of the head).

The sew-in is a better method if you have thicklong hair.

Best wig style

This braid pattern works for almost every wig. However, it is most suitable for lace front, or wigs with closure. Alternatively, you can use it for side and center part wigs.

2. Diagonal Side Part of All Back Cornrows

This all-back cornrow braid pattern is similar to the straight all-back pattern. The difference is the side part. As we’ve established before, the size of individual braids depends on the volume of your hair.

Diagonal Side Part of All Back Cornrows

It is also better to divide the hair into small or middle-size braids. Aside from making the wig lie flat, it ensures the braids last long. You can also rock it when you don’t feel like wearing a wig.

This braid pattern is also beginner-friendly because you can install it yourself. Follow these simple steps to make it:

Step 1: Divide your hair into two unequal parts (deciding which part is bigger or smaller depends on the position you want the part to be).

Step 2: Divide the first half into rows. The difference between this braid and the straight all-back is the direction of the weave.

While you braid straight down for the straight all-back braid pattern, you braid diagonally using the position of the part as a guide. All the individual braids should start from the part straight down towards the ear, then curve backward.

Step 3: Repeat the braid from the side part. Just like we described in step 2 - weave all the rows backward, starting from the part down to the ear before making your way down towards the back.

You can tie your hair with a hair band (as seen in the picture above) before tucking it in. Alternatively, you can sew with thread upwards (This works great to secure your ends and reduce friction between the wig and your hair).

Best wig style

This braid pattern is suitable for side part wigs. That is because the part on your natural hair will meet with that of the wig and make for a flat-lying wig (especially in the parted area).

This braid pattern also works for frontal wigs, crochet, and headband wigs (especially if you want to show off your seamless braids in front).

3. Medium Size Diagonal Center Part All Back Cornrow

This braid pattern is similar to the previous one. The difference is the position of the part and section division.

Medium Size Diagonal Center Part All Back Cornrow

For this braid pattern, you divide your hair into two sections. Make the smaller section in front and the bigger section at the back.

The rows at the back section will be braided backward. The front section will first be woven diagonally, then backward, resembling the diagonal side part.

The great thing about this wig braid pattern is its versatility. You can use it for the center part and all back leave-out wigs. To use it for a leave-out wig, you can simply loosen two to three rows of the braids in the front and comb on top of your wig.

Don’t want to wear wigs sometimes? No problem, you can apply some oils to the parts for shine and lay your edges for a more finished look.

Do you want to do this braid yourself? Cool, you can do that by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Divide your hair into two unequal parts (divide this diagonally from neck to neck, leaving the smaller section in front).

Step 2: Divide the front section into two sections to form the center part. Use your nose line to get the precise center of your face.

Step 3: Divide the front section into small rows starting from the center (this helps to form the center part).

Step 4: Start to braid straight down from the center. Once the center part is formed, stop braiding diagonally to the back.

Step 5: Start to braid the back section. Divide this section into two and start to divide into smaller rows. Instead of braiding diagonally, braid straight down like you do for the all-back braid pattern.

Step 6: Once you are done with all the braids, tie up the ends of the braids with a hair band or scrunchies. Sew in upwards with thread for a flatter end at the back.

Best wig style

This braid pattern is great for a center-part wig. That is because the part on your natural hair will seamlessly overlap with that of the wig (especially at the parting).

This braid pattern is best for center-part wigs. You can also use it for closure wigs too.

4. Two-in-One All-Back Braid Pattern

This two-in-one all-back braid pattern is similar to the all-back braid pattern. The difference is the section division and number of braids at the back and front.

Two-in-One All-Back Braid Pattern

Are you confused about the intent of this braid pattern?

Alright, I‘ll explain.

We have more braided rows in front than at the back because we want the wig to lie flat at the front. This braid pattern is a great way to achieve a flat front section without spending time installing small braids at the back.

This is a good example of getting more for less (lol). I think it is also stylish too, you can also wear it daily when you don't want to wear wigs.

Interestingly, you can make this braid pattern yourself without visiting the saloon. This braid hairstyle involves plaiting your cornrows in straight rows at the back, but you have to divide it into two sections.

First dividing the hair into two sections will help you achieve the two-in-one effect. Follow these easy steps to install these braids.

Step 1: Divide your hair into two sections (divide from ear to ear), making the front section the smaller one.

Step 2: Further divide the front section into smaller rows. The goal is to have more braided rows in front than in the back.

Step 3: Plait the rows straight down until you get to the end of the section. Stop braiding where the section ends. Don’t braid the ends of the hair.

Step 4: Start dividing the back section into smaller rows like you did for the front section. To start braiding the back section, pick two braids from the front section, then use the part to create a row at the back.

Step 3: Join the already braided rows in front to the new row at the back, then braid straight down. Continue to join two braids to one until it is complete.

Step 4: Once the braids are complete, wrap the ends of your hair with a hair band or scrunch if you want to wear it like that on some days or sew it upwards if you want to secure your ends for a longer time.

Best wig style

This wig braid pattern is versatile because it works well for different wig styles like lace front wigs (especially 360 frontal wigs), headband wigs, and side, and center part wigs too.

5. U-Part Leave Out All Back Cornrow

This wig braid pattern is simple and a great option for U-shaped center and side parts. If you want to wear a u part wig that also allows you to leave some sections of your hair, then this braid pattern is a good choice.

U-Part Leave Out All Back Cornrow

That is because the U-part on the wig will sit perfectly with the one on your head. This braid style is just like the diagonal side or center part.

The difference is that, for this braid pattern, you will leave out a section of your hair in front forming the letter U (the leave-out can either be at the center or side).

You can also make this braid pattern yourself. Just follow the same method we used for the diagonal braids.

NoteRemember to section out the hair you want to leave out before you start braiding the hair. The hair you leave out is the hair you will comb out on top of the wig.

Best wig style

This wig braid pattern is best for side or center U-part wigs.

6. Single Large Side Brush and All Back Cornrows

This braid pattern works well for leave-out wigs. The cute thing about this wig braid pattern is that you can beautifully rock it like that or wear it under your wig.

Single Large Side Brush and All Back Cornrows

When it comes to wearing wigs with leave out, then this is the most versatile braid pattern. With this braid pattern, you can simply lose the single big braid in front and create your parting wherever you choose.

You can also make it yourself in minutes. Follow the braiding guide for diagonal all back braids. The difference is that instead of making many diagonal braids in the front section, you only need to make one large braid in front.

Best wig style

This wig braid pattern is best for headband wigs, U-part wigs, and 360 leave-out wigs.

That’s it!

As we said earlier, different braid patterns work well with different wig hairstyles. Also consider how often you want to switch up your wig styles, the volume of your hair, and the wig style before opting for a wig braid pattern.

While you wear a wig, always remember to care for your hair under the wig by washing, conditioning, and oiling it for the period you will be wearing a wig.

It is also important for you to care for your wigs like you do for your hair to elongate its life span.

There you have it.
